FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Durham, NC (April 25, 2020) -The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is saddened to report that Senior Detention Officer Alexander Pettiway, died yesterday April 25, 2020.

Sr. Officer Pettiway joined the Sheriff’s Office in July of 1996, serving the agency and residents of Durham County for 23 dedicated years. During that time he worked to train and mentor new detention officers, helping to shape the field training program for the detention center.

In a letter to staff, Major Cynthia Kornegay of the detention center said “To say he will be missed does not do justice to what any of us are feeling at this moment. Officer Pettiway was a unique, gentle soul and loved by us all.”

“Losing a member of our Sheriff’s Office family is never something you are prepared for,” said Sheriff Clarence Birkhead. “We will come together to support each other and Senior Officer Pettiway’s family as they deal with this great loss”

Sheriff Birkhead, Chief Deputy for Detention Services Anthony Prignano, and the men and women of the Durham County Sheriff’s office offer their deepest condolences to the family of our brother Alexander.

His family requests privacy in their time of grief and as they make funeral arrangements.
