Durham Man Charged after Fatality Crash
DURHAM, NC (Friday, October 3, 2025)–The Durham County Sheriff's Office has arrested Kevin Alejandro Ruiz Gomez, 18, of Durham, on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges following an incident on Thursday night.
Ruiz Gomez was released from the hospital after being treated for injuries sustained in the crash, which killed one and injured another. He is now being held at the Durham County Detention Center without bond.
Ruiz Gomez is charged with:
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury
- Flee to Elude Arrest with a Motor Vehicle
- Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle
- Speed Competition
- Failure to Heed Lights or Siren
- Reckless Driving - Wanton Disregard
- Driving While License Revoked - Not impaired
- Driving Left of Center
- Failure to Burn Headlamps
- Failure to Stop for a Steady Red Light

The following information was sent at 8:12 a.m.
At approximately11:00 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, October 2, 2025, a deputy with the Durham County Sheriff's Office was in the area of Carpenter Fletcher Road and NC 55when they observed two vehicles involved in street racing.
The deputy, operating an unmarked vehicle, attempted to stop the cars. One of the vehicles immediately turned off its lights and fled at a high rate of speed, evading the deputy's view.
The suspect vehicle was located a short time later, involved in a crash with a third, uninvolved vehicle at the intersection of NC 55 and Riddle Road. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was called to the scene to conduct the crash investigation.
This incident remains under investigation by the Durham County Sheriff's Office.
