The Durham County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting an 8 day summer camp for rising 9th grade
students in the month of July 2018. This camp is designed to promote community awareness
and civic responsibility by exposing youth to such things as local and state government, public
service professions, community service and environmental appreciation venues. Participants
will take daily field trips and travel to nearby recreational and educational destinations.
School Resources Officers will partner with a group of approximately 15 students to lead
activities designed to enhance the relationships between law enforcement and youth.
Activities may include (but not necessarily limited to) tours of the Durham County Detention
facility and Courthouse, North Carolina Capital Building, Senate Building, Durham County
Local Government Buildings, Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville NC, NC
Aquarium at Fort Fisher, USS North Carolina in Wilmington NC, Raleigh Durham International
Airport and the NC Zoo in Asheboro.
The camp is free to participants; a small breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided daily.
Participants will be given their own camp t-shirts to be worn on a daily basis. Daily
participation is required. Applications will be accepted from students that attend the
following middle schools; Carrington, Githens, Lucas, Lowes Grove, and Neal. Students must be
in good standing and not have been subject to any disciplinary actions during the 2017-2018
school year. Applications will be processed on a first come, first serve basis. Parents must
provide their own transportation to and from the host site on a daily basis. School Resource
Officers at these middle schools will have applications available and will begin accepting
completed applications on May 10, 2018.
The 8 day camp will run July 17th – 20th and July 23rd – 26th. General hours will be from 8:30am
– 5:00pm (out of town trips may require an earlier reporting time).
