The Durham County Sheriff's Office announced the creation of a Hispanic Community Outreach Coordinator in February 2017 in response to concerns about federal immigration enforcement. The Hispanic Community Outreach Coordinator is working to address concerns by:
- Assisting Spanish-speaking crime victims
- Organizing community meetings in the Hispanic community
- Gathering community feedback for consideration as the Sheriff's Office revises and develops new policies
- Promoting and expanding existing outreach services such as Creating Healthy Opportunities Inspiring Children to Have Everyday Success (C.H.O.I.C.E.S), a mentor program
While the Community Outreach Coordinator primarily focuses on Durham’s Hispanic community, all residents are encouraged to contact the new Community Outreach Coordinator at (919) 560-7474 or Outreach@DurhamSheriff.org.
