Michael D. Andrews - Durham County Sheriff
As your elected Sheriff and as a Durham native, it is my privilege to serve and protect our community. Whether applying for a gun permit or a request for Animal Services, the Sheriff's Office is often the first encounter Durham County residents have with law enforcement. It's the reason why I encourage my deputies and detention officers to perform their job in the spirit of honor, duty, and service. When I was a recruit, it was called "sheriffing," a law enforcement tradition that is still an integral part of the Sheriff's Office today. We're talking with residents, learning about their challenges, listening to their concerns, and using those conversations to make the Durham County Sheriff's Office an agency our community can be proud of.
With more than three decades of experience with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, I've served in investigations, training, recruitment, and patrol. During my tenure with the Sheriff's Office, I was a member of the Sheriff's Emergency Response Team (SERT) and the Search and Recovery (SAR) deep-water diving team. Some of my most rewarding work as a law enforcement leader has been in the classroom and in the field. As a general and specialized instructor, I was responsible for training and motivating new recruits.
A good teacher must also be a willing student. Some of my proudest achievements include earning an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the State of North Carolina. I've received leadership and supervision training through the Law Enforcement Executive program hosted by Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the Institute of Government. I am a graduate of the Carolina Command College hosted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In March 2002, I completed the 208th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
On behalf of the Durham County Sheriff's Office, thank you for the privilege of serving you and your family.
In honor, duty, and in service,
Michael D. Andrews
